Brandon Cowan, from D-Flock Texarkana, joins Zach Rateliff to unveil the rapid growth and the community's concerns surrounding these installations. With over 2,500 members rallying for transparency and accountability, the discussion dives into the ethical implications of constant surveillance by private entities. The conversation digs deeper into how Flock operates—leasing license plate readers to law enforcement agencies across the nation, thus creating a database of our movements. What happens when those who wield the technology abuse it? Cowan highlights alarming instances of misuse already reported among officers. As technology evolves with features like AI facial recognition and drone capabilities, listeners are faced with the chilling reality of surveillance comparable to systems in authoritarian regimes. The episode outlines how community activists like D-Flock are demanding audits and pushing back against unchecked surveillance, revealing a newfound unity across political lines. It's a powerful conversation on the need for vigilance and community engagement in preserving our freedoms in an age of surveillance.
